Our founding story

The Overseas Mon Coordinating Committee (OMCC) formally adopted its current name in 2019 amid growing international attention to Myanmar following proceedings at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The name was proposed by Dr. Siri Mon Chan and endorsed by second-generation co-founders, including Nai Janoi Marn, Nai Kimmar Mon, Nai Apar Hong Mon, Nai Ougkar Mon, Nai Ku Rott, and Nai Soiha. This marked the organization's reactivation after approximately years of inactivity.

Following the re-establishment process in 2019, OMCC leaders reconnected with Mon communities worldwide to revitalize the organization. After six preparatory meetings, OMCC was formally established on May 20, 2020, with a leadership structure comprising four patrons and five secretaries. The patrons included Nai Janoi Marn, Nai Kimmar Mon, Nai Kyaik Kao and Nai Kaleng Tan while the secretarial team included Nai Apar Hong Mon, Nai Saha Mon, Nai Ku Rot, Mi Htaw Oo, and Nai Jimmy Mon.

Our mission and goals

Today, OMCC functions as an independent civil society organization dedicated to promoting democratic values, political awareness, human rights, and collective engagement among Mon communities worldwide. We strive to empower and unite Mon people globally, advocating for their rights and fostering a stronger, more informed community.

What makes us unique

Between 2020 and 2021, OMCC gained broader recognition through its flagship initiative, the Mon Family Conversation Talk Show, named by Nai Weang Nai. The program featured discussions with Mon political leaders, youth, artists, and ethnic representatives from Myanmar and the diaspora. One of the most widely viewed episodes, which addressed landmine conflicts in Myanmar, was conducted in English and featured contributors such as Dr. Ponnya Mon and Nai Cham Toik, Nai Kasuk Mon, Janoi Marn , Dinpla Hongsa, hosted by Apar Hong Mon. Through these activities, OMCC raised awareness of political developments, human rights concerns, and educational issues affecting Mon communities.

"The Overseas Mon Coordinating Committee has been instrumental in bringing critical issues to light and empowering our community. Their dedication is truly inspiring."
